The Power of Rituals: Why Ritual is the Ultimate Luxury
Written by Lily Gray
Welcome to By Lily Gray’s very first blog—this post feels like the right place to start, and I’m glad we are beginning this journey together.I want to talk about something that sits at the heart of the By Lily Gray philosophy: Ritual.
Often, we confuse rituals with routines. But there is a world of difference between the two. A routine is a means to an end—a sequence of tasks performed to finish a day or tick a box.
A ritual, however, is a conscious, symbolic act. It is a moment created purely for the sake of the soul. There is no specific "output" required, only a desire for a moment of calm amidst the chaos.

Paris, 2020: Finding Stillness in the 18eme
Rituals have always been an unintentional part of my life, but they became an integral part in 2020. I was 24, finishing fashion school in Paris when covid hit and I suddenly found myself "stuck" inside all day long. Home was a small two-bedroom apartment across the street from the Moulin Rouge, which suddenly my roommate and I were sharing with our four best friends.
It was a beautiful, cramped, dreamlike blur.
Between the uncertainty of the pandemic and the heavy, internal work of my own healing I was desperate for quiet. I needed a way to signal to my body that, despite the constant movement around me and in my head, I was safe.
That was the summer my first intentional ritual was born. Every afternoon, I would draw a bath with the same salts and the same scents. While the water ran, I’d pull a quick tarot spread. Once in the bath, I’d turn on my sound frequencies playlist and find myself deep into meditation or writing.
Soon after, we discovered a precarious way to sneak onto the roof of our building and I saw the opening for a new ritual. Every morning, I’d wake up, make my first coffee of the day, grab a sweater, my journal, and crawl out onto the roof looking over the Parisian skyline. In those moments breathing morning air with the Sacré Coeur in front of me, the Eiffel Tower behind me, and my journal in hand, the "high alert" hum of my brain finally quieted down. My mind wasn't just resting; it was clear.

The Science of the Soul
This wasn't just a "placebo effect." There is a real neurological reason these moments changed how I felt in my body and mind.
When we perform predictable, repeated actions, we are directly calming our amygdala—the brain’s emotional processing center, specifically the area that manages fear and anxiety. By repeating a ritual, you are sending a physical signal to your nervous system that you are grounded.
By following these predictable actions, we also give our prefrontal cortex a rest. We lessen the "decision fatigue" of daily life, saving our mental energy for the bigger, more complex choices that move our lives forward.

Modern Rituals: My Way
My life looks different now than it did in that apartment by the Moulin Rouge. I no longer have hours to spend in a bath meditating, but the need for ritual remains. Today, it’s the quiet meditation I do before my husband and dog wake up—a tiny pocket of peace before the world rushes in.
At By Lily Gray, we believe the ultimate luxury isn't a price tag—it’s the luxury of slowing down. If you’re looking to invite more slow-luxury into your world, start small:
-
The Scented Signal: Lighting your favorite candle the moment you get into bed.
-
The Morning Threshold: Opening your windows wide to let the morning air reset your space.
-
The Mid-Day Reset: A five-minute meditation after your lunch break to reclaim your center.
-
The Evening Release: Writing five lines—just five—about anything on your mind before sleep.
-
The Breath: Three deep, conscious breaths in between meetings or tasks.

The Invitation
Whether it is the ritual of your morning coffee, the intentional way you light a candle at dusk, or a long reflective bath, these moments are your sanctuary. They are the "slow-luxury" that belongs entirely to you.
As we grow this community, I want By Lily Gray to be more than just a brand; I want it to be a reminder that you deserve the space to breathe, pause, and return to yourself.
Tell me in the comments, or over on our socials: What is one ritual that makes you feel like yourself again?
With love,
